
A dog nabs a sandwich from a student receiving free summer lunches from the United Way’s Summer Feeding Program in Laurel County, Kentucky. The program assists low-income families that rely on free or subsidized meals during the school year. “It helps a lot. With the extra money we’ve saved, I’ve been able to get the kids clothing and shoes for school,” said Laura Patenia, mother of four. “We usually struggle with that kind of stuff.”


Brian Nelson, who spent more than 10 years in solitary confinement, visits the first prison he was admitted to in Joliet, Illinois. After about a year at Joliet Correctional Center, he was transferred to the supermax prison Tamms Correctional Center. Nelson's testimony in the court case against Tamms would lead to the prison's closure in 2013.
